Farewell Corn.

Garden4June 013I went out to water my garden today and found my corn bed has been completely chomped!  All that The Beast left behind are tiny holes and little discarded leaves.

I'm now remembering that this has happened in the past and the only way we got corn stalks last year was to start them under bird netting.  I wish I would have remembered that two weeks ago!

Anyone have a good idea for a crop that can go into a 10 x 4 bed this late in the gardening game?  Maybe we'll pile our potatoes in that bed... hmmm.  Click Here to read more of the garden stories from this week :)

  1. It's not too late to try the corn again with the netting this time. If you pick a fairly short season variety, you can just harvest later in the season than you normally would. I may be trying that myself as a matter of fact. Last year the beasties left my corn alone, but this year the seedlings seem to be getting munched on. Aargh!

  2. Ugh! Those critters are so annoying! Hope you find a replacement quickly.

  3. Critters seem to be a theme amongst the veggie gardeners this week, alas. I guess they have to eat too, but why not at someone else's garden patch!

  4. I agree with Chris - it's not to late to replant the corn if you get a shorter season variety. You might also try some green beans. Pesky varmints - I feel your pain!

  5. Chris is right! I just planted our corn bed using a 64 day corn called "Quickie" that only grows to about 5 feet. I grew it last year and it's tasty as well.

Thanks for linking up to the Tuesday Garden Party!

  6. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear! Hopefully you were able to plant some short season corn! It looks like you have quite the garden! Blows my 4 foot by 4 foot garden away! ;)

  7. We gave up on the corn for this year because we don't have the stuff or the time to try to protect it. But the bed is not going to waste: we planted potatoes. I'll be blogging more on that when they start to come up :)
