So the USDA has a posting as to the average costs of eating meals at home. You can
click here to see what the USDA considers to be average spending on groceries. I'd be fascinated to know how your grocery spending looks next to their totals! (The June reports show a yearly average)
Oh My, I would love to see how they get these numbers, for our family we are spending 400 less then they say for the Thrifity plan.
ReplyDeleteAnd the thrifity plan is what they base the amount of food stamps you can get on.
This summer we did a crop share, and that was pretty economical. I think we were in the range of their low/thrifty category. However, in other parts of the year, we do spend more. We use a lot of fresh fruit and veggies (=more expensive) and we also do a fair amount of pre-prepared food (healthy/organic versions = way more expensive). Since we have the money (and not so much time) we spend it. But, if it were otherwise, I'd probably spend less.
ReplyDeleteWe are a family of 5, so I added everything up individually by age. On the 'low cost' plan, they say we should average nearly $1000. I'd cry if we spent that much. Even on the thrifty plan, it's $704... and that is about $100 more than we spend on food.
ReplyDeleteI would say we are in the $350.00 to $500.00 range for a month for a family of four. One adult, 1 nine year old, and 1 12 year old. I provide all three meals every day and have averaged in there eating out the two nights a week we grab subway on our way to games. It would be closer to 350.00 though if I was really on top of things and the whole budget every minute.
